i think it's great that you follow this and you're doing a good job.

i do disagree with your statement. it hasn't been a decade of neglect. it's been much longer and those 'benefits' of neglect, spanning decades; were enjoyed by a few politicians and those that believe it's their destiny to suck on the state's tit all their lives.

100 years ago, the hellenic navy could take on the ottoman/turkish navy. today, we need coalitions.

Fair, but how long do you think the neglect has been for?

I agree that the real cause of Greece's ills are the politicians who enjoy immunity as the country they are set to represent deteriorates

i guess here's some finality on the corvette issue..looks like 6 (1 + 5 verbal agreement - we know how that might go) corvettes with israeli tech, 'modified' for hellenic navy needs. will be constructed in both greece and israel. corvette design is based off israeli sa'ar 72 mini-corvette. 800 tons, 30+ knots top speed, nautical range of 5,000 miles, crew of 45 and additional 20 special forces personnel (if needed)..1 helicopter pad. greece has turned to france for frigates and israel for corvettes.

i'm no expert, corvettes in the past were used mainly for anti-sub warfare. corvettes are the 'new destroyers' and frigates are the 'new cruisers'.

imagine themistocles today. explaining to him that his ancestors need naval and other technology from a people that during themistocles' time - weren't known for anything, except for being religious zealots.

Would have loved to see him go up against Ottoman sympathisers like Dora Bakoyannis and her belief that supplication/diplomacy will save Greece from the eastern invasions of Greek land.

I wonder what the oracle would have told Themistokles today? The fez sinks to the bottom of the aegean but skull caps remain floating on the surface. Maybe: Build your walls from bagels.

yes..obviously, i meant to say themistocles' descendants...but i'm sure you know what i meant.

joining nato and the eu has helped greece. those organizations are more of a deterrent to turkey than not being in any multi-national organizations. what's the alternative?? military alliance with serbia??? the trade-off is the greek capital is now brussels, not athens and greece does look timid in regards to foreign policy.

the fact of the matter is, the greek govt. won't push the envelope with the eu (we want your money) nor nato (we don't want to be kicked out) in regards to turkish provocations. the russians do a bit of the same to the usa and the usa does the same to the russians.

if they do get 6 of these..not bad. considering these are mainly for anti-sub/convoy escort duty...greece probably has 5 sea zones to manage. n. aegean/aegean/eastern aegean/med (south of crete) and ionian.

depending on amount of frigates and corvettes..how many ships can preform duties in 5 sea zones. some zones are smaller than others, others are much more vulnerable and difficult for greece to protect and maintain greek sovereignty..other zones are crucial (sea lanes into piraeus).

in regards to offensive war against any potential enemy..frigates and submarines are what we have. not many, but we can only have so many task forces due to the small amount. looks like much of the naval capacity would only be used for defensive purposes, such as escorting and keeping sea lanes open.

the upgraded frigates and corvettes are a good start.

There is another thing to consider. Those seas behave very differently. Crossing the Aegean is not as easy as it appears. It is not just how many boats you have but what kind you possess. As the battle of salamis proved.

what kind of vessel you possess. sure.

compare quality and then consider the quantity of vessels and we understand that greece needs to urgently upgrade..in numbers and quality.

the israeli corvette is a mini-corvette, at 800 tons. the older turkish corvettes displace 1,300 tons and turkey's modern corvettes (4 active + 4 more planned) displace 2,400 tons. greece is most vulnerable in the eastern aegean while turkey is most vulnerable in the med, south of crete. turkish vessels, especially commercial drill ships are extremely vulnerable in an area that should be comprehensive greek air superiority.

to win over the world, greece must concentrate any attack on the drilling ships, commercial and the naval task force sent to protect the drillship and it's support vessels - in accepted greek waters.

last week, the french complained about an incident between it's navy and the turkish navy. the french frigate (courbet) was radar-targeted by a turkish frigate as the courbet was inspecting a cargo ship bound for libya. the turkish frigate was accompanying the cargo ship as an escort. apparently, a greek ship was denied an earlier opportunity to inspect the same ship, a few days earlier.

Greece and Israel reached a deal on opening a flight school in Greece worth 1.7 billion

The agreement is building upon the strong ties Greece and Israel have fostered which include the leasing of Heron drones and the east med gas pipeline.

                          https://www.defensenews.com/training...orce-training/

JERUSALEM — As part of a $1.68 billion deal between Israel and Greece — the largest-ever defense agreement between the two countries — the Hellenic Air Force will acquire 10 M-346 aircraft and Israel’s Elbit Systems will establish a flight school and maintain training aircraft.

Israel will also provide simulators, training and logistical support as part of the 20-year deal. It is part of an increasingly close relationship between Athens and Jerusalem that has seen Greece lease Israeli drones and also involved a pipeline deal signed last year.

Israeli Defense Ministry Benny Gantz said the deal reflected the excellent and developing relations with Greece. “It is a long-term partnership that will serve the interests of both Israel and Greece, create hundreds of jobs in both countries and promote stability in the Mediterranean,” he said, commending “recent strengthening of defense relations between our countries” and noting “my expectation that these will deepen further.”

Israel’s Ministry of Defense participated in a tender and won the bid for the Greek contract. The flight school will be built and maintained by Elbit Systems.

The company’s CEO, Bezhalel Machlis, said the new capability will strengthen bilateral relations. “This selection attests to the leading position we hold in the area of training, providing tested know-how and proven technologies that improve readiness while reducing costs.”

Israel’s Directorate for International Defense Cooperation within the MoD, also known as SIBAT, will sign the deal along with Elbit Systems. “This is not just a defense export agreement, but rather a partnership for at least 20 years,” SIBAT head Yair Kulas said. “I would like to thank the Greek Ministry of National Defense for its trust and for assigning this important task to the Israel Ministry of Defense and our excellent defense industry.”

The flight school will be based on Israel’s flight academy, and Leonardo will provide the M-346 trainers. Leonardo has previously partnered with Elbit on simulators, according to reports last year. The M-346 is called the “Lavi” in Israel and was selected by the country in 2012 for training pilots. T-6 trainers will also be maintained as part of the historic bilateral deal.

The Israeli government said the future could hold cooperation between the Israeli and Greek flight academies. Israel trained with Greek pilots in the Blue Flag drills last year.
