  • Sokratis (Arsenal)

Didn’t play this weekend after picking up an injury last week. But he’s fast becoming their most reliable defender.

The problem is that Mustafi is trash, Bellerin can’t defend and the defensive midfield offers little cover.

still, the team looks to be adjusting to Emery’s tactics and is doing wel.

What happened to Mavropanos - is he still at Arsenal? Not even making the bench..

Mustafi is so lucky he has a World Cup ring. Normally he'd be playing in Bundesliga 2 but because of a couple decent performances in Mundial his price and presumed ability skyrocket. Sokratis winning over a lot of the fans who were naysayers from the beginning, however he's always going to be one tanning from the big 4 away from being called a shitty defender. It's the nature of EPL fans to be so fickle.

Mavropanos I believe is still getting over injury.

Sokratis is giving Arsenal the steeliness they've been missing.

The biggest problem with Arsenal is they need to replace Xhaka with a real DM, someone with experience and who can get on the case of other players to pull their weight around. Torreira and Guendouzi are too young and inexperienced to really get on teammates cases and both need guidance. The Arsenal defense will continue to be exposed if the men up top don't press like they do at Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Torreira and Guendouzi have loads of energy and love to press, but again their lack of experience is a problem and Arsenal needs a further upgrade at DM more than anywhere.

Ozil is beginning to show his quality again, but it's more about him just keeping it simple and finding space in dangerous areas. I still think he can do more. Aubameyang isn't a great targetman. He's great at running in behind, but he rarely scores any headers. Arsenal may need to bring in a proper CF and play with two forwards in order to get more out of Ozil.

Didn’t watch the game but Sokratis scored the first in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Qarabag

Good to grab that first goal. They did get pulled apart in defence a few times though. Lucky to win 3-0.

Not in the 18 for Arsenal's match today with Leicester. How bad was the knock he picked up against Finland?

Sokratis was awful against Liverpool. He couldn't handle Salah. He couldn't get his positioning right at all. He either gave Salah too much space, fearing he would get in behind him, or he got the wrong side of him (like on the penalty he conceded). On the second goal, it was all too easy for Firmino. Sokratis got his ankles cross. He's no Nesta. Sokratis would need to take a player like Firmino down outside the area, he's not surgical enough to strip the ball away cleanly. He's got heavy feet. All muscle and heavy feet. He's been playing too much football. Between England and Germany, he's gotten no breaks in the winter. Add that to Nations League and Europa League, let's just say this dog has seen better days. I don't think he's last longer than his contract with Arsenal and he may be shipped out as soon as the summer. It would be a good time for OSFP or AEK to sign him when his time is up at Arsenal. He might ready to settle back down in Greece with his family by then.

Sokratis needed to get tough with Salah, like Ramos did. That's the only way Sokratis will last in the EPL is by getting tougher. Bickering with him as they head for the tunnels isn't my idea of getting tough. He needed to take a piece out of him. He better get tough with his opponents who are bit too good for him. He's need to build a reputation as a defender everyone hates to go against and everyone would love to have.

Sokratis is massively loved by the greek media and alo massively respected (it is because of his influence we had to endure another failed campaign under skibbe).. however i think he is severely overrated. Even think mavropanos if he ever gets fit is prob already better.

I don't know about overrated, but he was poor against Liverpool. In other matches, he's been very good, even when Arsenal lost 2-0 to Tottenham, he had played well. Against Liverpool, he couldn't get his positioning right and was caught on the wrong angle or position on each goal. He couldn't handle Salah and this coming from a player who could mark Messi on his own when it generally took 3-4 players to mark Messi, who at time was a much more direct player unlike now. Sokratis has gotten older and his feet are too heavy. He's not nimble like he once was. He has to improve his positional sense. Guys like Chiellin and Hummels are still top defenders only because they have great positional sense, are strong, and partner well. He also needed to get tougher. He's a tough guy, but he needs to go in tough every game, especially against quality players. Ramos could deal with Salah precisely because he got tough with him. He doesn't need to tear Salah's arm out of its socket, but he needs to make his presence felt and go in hard shoulder-to-shoulder and in his tackles every chance he gets.

I hope we see Sokratis and Mavropanos start together at CB. Arsenal fans love both of them and want them to start together. By the way here is a video of the training session they had a few days ago...

Mavropanos scores a long range shot in training.

He's got a better right-foot than some of our forwards.
