  • PAOK vs Ajax - CL Third Qual Round

They deserve this. Remember last season when they were throwing games in Europe - losing to Vidi and Bate at home? They threw those games to save energy and players for the league. If they had played honourably, they would have amassed more points and would not be in the weaker pot come the day of the draw.

Well said. They stand very little chance of progress.

Paschalakis did call out “bring us Ajax” he got what he wished for

Ajax aren't strong as last season, but if Paschalakis doesn't show the same fragility he showed against Benfica this time last season, then they might give a decent account of themselves. I don't think PAOK have enough quality to beat Ajax. Much will depend on Paschalakis if PAOK are to avoid a thrashing. A great performance from him would prove me and many of his doubters wrong.

Neres is out injured and Van De Beek will be heading to Real Madrid. So there is light at the end of the tunnel for PAOK, but there's no underestimating Ajax. Huntelaar is an old hand, but he's still sharp. We could see Dolberg instead, but in Thessaloniki I expect the more experienced of the two to start. Promes, Tadic and Ziyech will be a handful. Marin and Schone will likely underpin them. At the back, Pierie or Schuurs could start alongside Blind, but Ajax have other options too. Tagliafico at LB, Veltman or Mazraoui at RB, and Onana in GK are likely to fill out the remaining spots in the eleven. This is a very good Ajax side. Young and bursting with energy. They can really run away with it if Paschalakis doesn't put in a superman performance.

PAOK look comical at the back. Ajax draw even with a lucky bounce.

Akpom has been a standout for PAOK. He's leading the line well, but Ajax are looking the likeliest to score the next goal.

Pelkas has been too involved in the play lately and has been replaced by Limnios.

                          How did Pelkas play Don?

Thought the PAOK coach made a mistake starting Esiti over Augusto.

Pelkas for me was not captain material. Didn't do enough. Akpom very impressive.

Giannoulis effectively cost PAOK the game. Scored a beauty for Ajax while taking up a CB position on a set piece. Surely he will be one of the first left backs rewarded by Van Shipt and crow-barred directly into the NT 11 as a winger or CB.

PAOK eventually pulled numbers back into 4-5-1 formation and could barely break as they attempted to push Limnios and Stoch, both subs, into an attacking trident with Akpom. El Khadouri tried to offer some creativity through the middle, but PAOK simply couldn't get going. Ajax were all over them.

Too often Ajax tried to be too neat. They looked to play the ball into the net rather than take their chances from distance. And when they did take shots from distance, they tried to place the ball perfectly into the corner when it was enough to play it through bodies and hope for a lucky deflection or hope for a goalkeeping error. Both goals Ajax ultimately scored were more a matter of fortuity than a matter of quality.

I think PAOK will be disappointed in themselves. They could have ran out 2-0 winners if they kept more of their cool inside their own 6 yard box.
