I'm not sure if you guys are religious, but I've become bothered by the leadership of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, given that I live in the states.
Saint Nicholas was destroyed on 9/11 and when news broke out that it would be rebuilt, there was a huge drive to get donations from the very wealthy Greek diaspora in New York and America at large. Fast forward and Saint Nicholas is not finished, and no work has been done on it in months (I work a block away from the church and pass it multiple times a day). Archbishop Dimitrios is 90+ years old, and has this massive scandal about what happened to the millions of dollars that were meant to rebuild St. Nicholas and yet he doesn't resign. To me the fact that there wasn't an explanation as to what happened means to me there are a lot of dirty hands in the church, and it's incredibly unfortunate.
Secondly, I'm not sure why but why don't Greek churches in the states place a flag pole of the Greek/Cypriot/American flag?
This past sunday it occurred to me as I was outside of church that only the Greek flag and the American flag where there.
IMO, the separation of church and state is a fine idea, but Greece's gov and religious entities have to realize that church/culture are symbiotic and for the diaspora, being Greek is all encompassing. Not including the cypriot flag to me is forgetting our culture, our struggle.
