Greece ‘overreacted’ to Turkish research mission, Erdogan spokesman says

Ibrahim Kalin, spokesman of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said Thursday that Greece had “overreacted” to plans by Turkey to proceed with an oil-and-gas research mission south of Greek islands in the Eastern Mediterranean.
“They reacted as if a military maneuver had taken place,” Kalin said during an online event organized by the Brussels-based European Policy Center.
Kalin said Turkey did not want military or political tension in the East Med.
However, he accused Greece of adopting “maximalist” claims in the region, adding that the Greek island of Kastellorizo, being 2 kilometers away from the Turkish mainland and 580 kilometers off the Greek coast, could not generate continental shelf rights.Comment

I think a Greece/Egypt EEZ agreement has to be signed within the next week or 2 because Erdogan will not back down. He may delay a bit, but he will not back down. Both leaders know an agreement will help both against Turkish pressure.
Also, massive support from Macron who released a full statement in Greek on his facebook page. I do believe that Greece's best chance of getting legitimate support from the EU would be through France.
Germany has far too much money tied up in Turkey to seriously hold Turkey accountable.Comment

Although Erdoğan had a cheap “victory” by converting Hagia Sophia, Turkey’s inability to penetrate Greek maritime space since Tuesday and withdrawing its warships demonstrates that Turkey is unwilling to risk war with a country that is not already devastated by years of war like Libya or Syria as it has significant internal military issues.Comment

I follow a lot of greek social media accounts on twitter and think that far too many people are getting too excited about the turks backing down. I think we need to temper our outlook and remain firm/diligent in countering any and all turkish aggression.
I do not believe, not even for a second, that Turkey is going to abandon its plans. Additionally, reports coming out stating that Turkey will withdraw its ships but in full anticipation of a dialogue with greece without any preconditions.
The Turks are trying to paint the picture that Greece is being aggressive and unreasonable in its approach. This is where Greece is sorely lacking. Turkey uses its Erdogan controlled media to push world wide narratives that their cause is just, while Greece sits on its ass all day and does not try to control anything.
Greece should not sit at any negotiation table with Turkey and I'd like to add that Turkey knows full well that an attack within Greece's continental shelf, or any of its islands would be catastrophic. Merkel has reportedly been cited as saying Greece is serious about defending its waters.
Great thing to hear, but let's not take it easy going forward.Comment

The German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung is arguing that Turkey has a point because Kastelorizo is a small island. Obviously German companies making extra bang for their buck is more important than reining in Erdogan and getting Turkey to function like a normal country again.
What the German paper neglects to mention is Erdogan has been in the habit of blackmailing Europe through a migration crisis, literally using human pawns. What will happen when Turkey, under Erdogan, has her hand on the till when it comes to energy supplies? Will he do what Putin did with Ukraine and cut the tap when it suits his purposes? I think the German papers should keep that fact in mind the next time they suggest our waters, Europe's waters, belong to an anti-Western, anti-Semitic, and anti-Christian Turkey.Comment

Negotiations will lead nowhere. I think Erdogan will move the goal posts. They won't be able to drill themselves, so he will eventually try to take the position of preventing us from drilling in our waters and turn that into a victory in the eyes of his supporters. We have to assert our rights and try to drill. Let them send warships and cry foul as much as they want. If they really want to pick a fight with us it will be their loss.Comment

What has encouraged Erdogan concerning Greece is his success at creating grey zones and the fact he is allowed to violate Greek airspace without consequence. Add to this Dora Bakoyannis's straw men of 'capitulate to Turkey or everyone dies in a war..' being a prevalent belief among Greeks.. - I think Erdogan is right to be tempted. Who wouldn't be? Like someone's wife constantly flirting with you.. and all the husband does is scroll his phone..
