  • The one thing this entire crises has done is show Greece that it must improve its military. To its credit, in a short period of time, it is doing what it had neglected for the past 10 years.

    • Mitsotakis is apparently set to unveil upgrades to the armed forces in the economic speech he'll be having tomorrow.

I believe immediate upgrades will include the immediate acquisition of 8 rafale fighters (which are said to be donated by France) as well as the future acquisition of 10 all new fighters. I'm also hoping to see something on new frigates as well as the upgrade of the MEKO class ones we already have.

More importantly, it has never been more clear that Greece needs to follow in Israel's footsteps. Similar to Israel who paired up with the US for the iron dome system, Greece needs to use the pool of highly educated young Greeks, to build missile systems, anti-missile systems, etc.

I'm dreaming but Greece should really shoot for the stars and look into a nuclear arms program where we build our own, but we would need gobs of money and we would need to keep it 100% secretive as there is no doubt a level of turkish secret operations within Greece.

Greece has to regain its footing in the homegrown arms industry. By doing so, we won't need the likes of France to come to our rescue, and we can employ greeks, while also eventually become an exporter of weapons systems.

I also believe a new department for countering propaganda has to be created within the Greek pentagon. Turkey has gone on a media blitz, by using its government owned media assets as well as paying large sums of cash to western media outlets (Guardian, Financial Times, European officials) to push the narrative that Turkey has a right and Greece's positions are unjust. Greece has to immediately counter this.

      • Amazing that Greece has no patriotic news outlets in English. No one takes GreekCityTimes seriously. Ekathimerini is the definition of pathetic soft left dribble.

Turkey has Sabah, Hurriet, TRT etc plus Bloomberg, New York Times all on the pay roll etc etc

i read the other day that an acquitaine class FREMM scheduled for delivery to egypt (egyptian navy already has 1) in the coming weeks will instead go directly to the greek navy. this frigate would immediately be greece's most powerful ship. i'm not sure if greece will keep this ship and purchase another for egypt. the greek crews will need intense training crammed into a minimal amount of time and the french defense industry is experiencing a renaissance not seen since pre-ww1 to ww2.

this obviously occurred with egyptian acceptance - they should, after reading some analysts' take that greece was extremely generous towards egypt with the greece-egypt EEZ agreement.

            • here's what mistotaki said today about greece's arms purchasing:

Mitsotakis said Greece would acquire 18 French-made Rafale warplanes in addition to four multi-purpose frigates and four navy helicopters whilst also hiring 15,000 new troops and pouring resources into the national arms industry and cyber-attack defence.

The programme, which includes upgrades of another existing four frigates, is also designed to create thousands of jobs, he said.
air - 18 rafales, 4.5 generation fighters. turkey has nothing above 4.0, though currently working on their own 5th generation fighters. the gap between 4th-5th generation fighters is the stealth tech of the fighter.

mitsotaki said nothing about the f-35s (5th generation). i have no info at the moment on the 4 naval helicopters, likely the eurocopter AS565...french manufactured.

naval - 4 multi-purpose frigates. i'm guessing this to be acquitaine class FREMM, not the belharra. greece will also upgrade it's current 4 hydra-class MEKO 200 frigates.

this will all cost money...i did see that last week greece had a successful sale of nearly 1 billion usd of 12 month t-bills at a yield of 0%. outstanding.

we don't have all these goodies now, but, in time. in the meanwhile, french support and presence will tide us over. eventually, greece will put macron on a national stamp. greece need him to win the next election.

ok..american helicopters, i believe those are..not french. surprising.

anyways, again...macron will be on a greek stamp in his lifetime. the french broke the german shield for turkey. the germans must be telling the turks that you provoked this and we can't deny greece top military equipment at this time.

egypt does have 2 helicopter carriers, 1 FREMM and a possible 2nd in a few weeks (unless it goes to the greek navy) - but many fast missile boats. maybe total tonnage divided by ships is a better way to gauge. the helicopter carriers are purely offensive, i'd be suspicious of any neighboring nation with any type of carrier and subs. turkey is nearly finished with it's helicopter carrier.

it can't be, because the usa forbids 3rd parties to train with exported f-16s. we all know turkish reality...everyone turns their heads with every turkish transgression.
