There was a meeting with the EU ministers going on and Turkey decided to issue a NAVTEX. They have gone back to the offensive (starting with Cyprus). They managed to get both the EU and the security council to issue them warnings in the same week. Not sure what his end game is but at the very least, he is impeding the peace process which was agreed to to avoid sanctions. Germany cancelling the meeting on route to Ankara is not a good sign for them. He must be desperate, all he is doing is galvanizing everyone behind Greece.

Easy thing for Tsipras to say as he is no longer in power and remember Turkey was slowly building up its provocative behavior while he was in power. What we are seeing now is in part his fault, but is also the fault of his predecessors.

But I do agree that there is no way forward - extension to 12 nm is the only way forward. Greece will need to announce to world powers that it is stopping all attempts at restarting exploratory talks citing Turkish aggression in multiple theaters surrounding the med. Greece is trying to paint itself as the calm and more mature actor to score points with the international community but at some point we are going to have to bite the bullet

Exploratory talks are paused. The state department came out today and deplored Turkey's unilateral steps in the Eastern Med noting that is not the way forward and to get back to negotiations. I guess Turkey does want to unite NATO...

Turkey is under no threat of being removed from NATO, whatever it does in Greece, Syria, Libya, Armena etc. Turkey is simply claiming seas Greece is not willing to physically defend or officially claim.

Looks like Dendias will be be going to to Eril in Iraqi Kurdistan tomorrow to inaugurate a consulate general which is something we've all been waiting for.

I think Greece's foreign diplomacy has become more aggressive, but is taking some time to reach that point

I do believe they are discussing the 12 miles with the EU. The fact Germany was annoyed (the FM said that today) speaks to volumes. Also, the FM of Sweden and Turkey got into a verbal debate when they were issuing their joint press conference. Apparently, the Turkish FM didn't like what the Swedish FM said and challenged her during their closing remarks. She said that she was a guest in his country and did not want to debate on tv. After some back and forth, she said she wished the Turkish citizens can speak as freely as he just did.

I suspect that Greece is asking for EU unilateral support for the 12 mile extension and I suspect, like with sanctions, Germany will attempt to block a statement on supporting the move the way they blocked a supportive statement over the Greece/Egypt agreement.

I think the EU had realized that this is not working. They need to pick a side or have a war right in their back/front yard. They will lose all credibility as an alliance and the ramifications will be felt for years to come. Either defend your borders or tear them down completely. There is no middle ground.

Very good post but I think the situation may be in advance of this stage.

The EU, has picked a side. Turkey. Hence no sanctions. Hence blocking a congratulatory statement in the Greece Egypt deal. EU has picked a side, or rather, Germany has picked a side and Germany has a controlling veto. Because of this position, the EU doesn't really care or want to get involved in Greek borders. Also Greece itself by not having unilateral declarations of EEZ does not encourage clarity or resolution. If I was a neutral EU member, I too would stand back from the Greece vs Turkey conflict until Greece has a more solid position concerning how it defines its own sovereignty. Worst thing is to pick an ally that doesn't control its sovereignty but has it dictated by a 3rd party (Turkey).

I think the EU/Turkey and Greece know there will be no war. Greece refuses to defend its sovereign territory physically and as long as that is Greek policy, there will be no war, just humiliation and a Greek loss of land/sea with new grey areas appearing daily.

As long as Greece chooses middle ground and confusion, there will be no resolutions or allies.
