on the former website, i had said that greece should seek better ties with france to neutralize british support for turkey/fyrom. exploit the crack between the two eternal friends/enemies - the same way turkey & russia use each other to pull on the weakest strings holding nato and the eu (economically) together.
now that brexit is reality, france wasted no time in reaching out to greece. push to be the master of balkan and n. african geopolitics and wisely seeing the future threat to france (from a combined turkey & russia). france (and italy) has decided that now is the time to stand up to turkish meddling and belligerence in areas that turkey will surely overextended itself, if turkey continues down the path from the barracks.
the meeting between greek and turkish military heads was a waste of time and repeat of the dog that barks and doesn't bite. the turkish military can't sign any diplomatic deals, so..total waste of time. as a signal of good faith 'talks', we'll violate your airspace only 34 times on the day of the 'talks'.
on another note for the today's neo-ellhves who are indeed the world's biggest kepatades. visiting various news outlets from the arab/paki world and the muslim universe, no one supports greece in all this. all the comments are supporting turkey due to primitive tribalism. the greeks believe the arabs/muslims love them because of greece's traditional support for arab terrorists and dictators and the palestinians...they are sorely mistaken.

it appears as though turkey has weighed and measured this formidable pact...and decided to attack this from it's weakest link - approaching greece, itself.
from a greek perspective, no clue what purpose the meeting of military heads could produce. it's buying time for turkey and temporarily soothing things over for them. all this, at the exact moment you want to turn up the pressure on turkey, extended all over and now with india on it's shit-list.
i was shocked that france would go as far with greece as it did - a military pact. france does see the future and has decided that turkey must be stopped in it's tracks now. hopefully, greece plays it's cards correctly. we know that it's citizens would muck everything up, the govt. needs to be smart here.
this turkish mistake will also allow for greece to speed up it's naval modernization through aid and grants for equipment and tech from france & italy....that never would have materialized if turkey didn't play it's games in libya and the mediterranean. big mistake by turkey...just begging to be exploited.

Turkey is sitting pretty because it realizes that Greece doesn't want to ratchet up the tensions - even though it should.
Latest news is that the Turks tried to block the Greek coast guard from helping refugees near Kastelorizo.

When a bully isn't met with equal or greater force, you allow the bully to control the narrative and how things play out. Greece, weakened by 10+ years of economic issues, thought the best way to go about things was to forget about its armed forces and to continue to rely on "confidence building measures" to keep Turkey at bay.
Greece's leadership is beyond idiotic in its approach, but given how many scenarios Erdogan has gottenTurkey into, Greece can now go on a mad dash to get back on to the international stage, up it's military spending/modernization, and absolutely needs a complete overhaul in how it deals with Turkey.
Turkey will never be a friend and thinking that somehow being part of the EU is going to save Greece is tone deaf and downright stupid.

On a good note, even the GNA is dissociating itself from Turkey:
Turkey trying to ‘CONQUER’ Libya, not to bring peace, says top Tripoli govt diplomat visiting Moscow
https://www.rt.com/news/481040-turke...a-gna-erdogan/
While Ankara claims to be supporting Libya’s UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), its foreign minister on Monday outright rejected the Turkish presence in Libya, blasting it as an “aggression.”"This is obviously not a Turkish interference, but an aggression. It’s a new attempt by Turks to conquer Libya."
http://www.ekathimerini.com/249608/a...ya-turkey-deal
Athens is bracing for the United Nations’ Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea to post the geographical coordinates outlined in the maritime border agreement signed by Turkey and the Tripoli-based government in Libya on November 29, 2019.On the contrary, in order to achieve this delimitation with Libya, Ankara has relied on uninhabited Turkish islets, which are assigned full effect in determining the EEZ.
Athens has sought to highlight these distortions at the highest diplomatic level. However, given that the memorandum is a bilateral agreement between two internationally recognized governments, its objections are excepted to achieve only limited results.

Some of the gulf states (UAE, Saudis) oppose Turkey's moves. So does Egypt. The Muslim world is not one, united whole. Also, Israel isn't necessarily a friend on this:
https://www.israelhayom.com/opinions...eat-bad-blood/
The admiral who masterminded Turkey’s maritime deal with Libya thinks a similar agreement should also be signed with Israel, and there are some subtle signs suggesting this may not be as impossible as it sounds."In recent years, Ankara's ill-fated regional policy coupled with its unconditional support to the Muslim Brotherhood has led to the estrangement of [Turkey from] Egypt and Israel. As a result, Turkey faces a consortium of nations in the region eager to leverage the natural resources of the Eastern Mediterranean, to the detriment of Turkey's interests.
"For [President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan, the deal with Libya is a formula to break Turkey's isolation and win support for its bid for what he regards as a fairer distribution of offshore resources in the Eastern Mediterranean."Now that the Libyan deal is done, Yayci says there is one more thing Turkey should do: "There is a very important step we must take now. We should sign with Israel, as soon as possible, the same [EEZ] agreement we signed with Libya. This step must definitely be taken."

Turkey acts tough against Israel but the trade numbers between both countries is still very high. Erdogan acting like he's going to save the palestinians is all bluster and is not based in fact.
The UN is going to further dig Greece into the hole it fell into by its inaction, and I think the only way Greece comes out of it is if it somehow skirts the arms embargo, and actually helps Haftar beat Sarraj. Even then, Greece faces an up hill battle.
This is what happens when you adopt a policy on scared inaction in hopes of pacifying your enemy

Macron promised to “gradually” end the program allowing Muslim countries to send imams and teachers to France in order to teach languages and culture unsupervised by the state.
Speaking at the town of Mulhouse near the German border, he said that the influence of foreign imams leads some to “separate themselves from the Republic and therefore not respect its laws.”
[....]
There are currently 151 Turkish imams in France, according to the Interior Ministry.
[....]
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said that the practice of sending foreign imams to France will end in 2024.

turkey continues to spin the roulette wheel..greece needs to put all it's chips on blue (france).
as turkey did with bush#2 (we will allow you to open a front upon iraq from turkey, only if you give us $25 billion, abrams tanks, this military upgrade and that tech upgrade)...turkey is now dangling a turk-german political prisoner to germany in exchange for germany upgrading turkey's older model - not top leopard model; leopard tanks. the bad news is that greece also has the same tanks - though not as many.
https://nationalinterest.org/blog/bu...d-syria-124446
after the nonsensical meeting of military heads..turkey has declared that greece has 'accepted' the status quo in the e/s mediterranean. greece quickly denying this.
on and on it goes.

It seems the Trump's administration is coming around to Greek concerns:
https://greekcitytimes.com/2020/02/2...eces-eez-zone/
US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt stated that all Greek islands, irrespective of size, are entitled to exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf, during an interview on SKAI TV on Wednesday.
Pyatt also reiterated that the US government guarantees Greece’s security and is working behind the scenes to ease tension in the Aegean.
On the ‘illegal’ Turkey-Libya agreement, Pyatt supports Athens’ position, noting that it does not invalidate Greece’s rights in the region, based on the International Law of the Sea.
“These are issues that need to be resolved through dialogue and negotiations, not by unilateral actions that ignore the rights and interests of other parties,” he added.

Until Trump publicly speaks out against Turkey and adopts policies that hold Turkey responsible for its pirate tactics in Syria, East Med, Aegean and Libya, I don't trust that we can rely on the US.
Listen to this clip starting at 8:57 - and just listen to how he's spoken about Erdogan in the past.
So right now, it's pretty apparent that so long as Trump is in charge, which I believe will be for another term, Greece cannot rely on the US for concrete support.
