Unless Greeks troops invade and take control of the land, then I think it's a bad idea. After the antics the Turks pulled, they can't be trusted. Also the UN and EU is no position to argue that we can't suspend the review applicants. Given the circumstances, we are entitled to act as we must. This is a ploy that Turkey is using to advance their own interests to our detriment. We have to stand by that position and invoke concerns over the coronavirus if we must.

President Tayyip Erdogan met with EU officials on Wednesday to discuss developments in Syria and the migrants flooding the European borders. Erdogan's spokesman later said "no concrete proposition" on the migrants was made at the talks.

Also, this is in effect an armed conflict - Greece is fighting a propoganda/humanitarian battle.

Do not discount the threat that Turkey will push for more refugees on the islands in order to use it as a pretext to invade for safety of these persons.

That may not be so far fetched. Albeit our government can't do it alone, but with EU and NATO support, it can be accomplished as that would ward off a bigger war. It all depends on how Erdogan moves going forward. If he continues to act as he has rather than resign, that may become a reality.

The noises coming out of Moscow for today’s meeting is that not only will Erdogan not get any of Idlib from Putin, he’ll lose everything else in the process.

Remember, Russia holds a lot of sway over the Turkish economy and, as such, controls a fair amount of Erdogan’s political capital hostage. No matter how he tries to spin this, he’s the aggressor here and Putin knows he’s an unreliable partner.

The Russian Ministry of Defense isn’t playing games. In the same way that they systematically revealed the real narrative of U.S. support of the Syrian Civil War during the early stages of their military intervention it is now doing the same thing to Erdogan’s betrayal of the 2018 Sochi agreement.

The EU and NATO would never have the balls to enact something like that. They're still looking for ways to get turkey support for their invasion. Imagine them actually telling Turkey that?

Russia will not back down in this, and yields a ton of power. Turkey publishing conservative estimates to their dead, when in reality I imagine a few hundred turk troops have been killed in Syria, and add some for Libya while Haftar shits on them.

I think this syria thing is only a hold up - Turkey isn't going to let idlib go, it is essential for erdogan's expansionist ideology. In this time, I hope russia continues to pour a ton of resources towards the SAA and I'm hoping Russia continues to smash turks in the region.

It all depends on Erdogan. If he holds on to power, refusing to resign, that could plunge Turkey into a civil war. I don't think he'll go that far and instead he'll offer up his resignation if he's not allowed to save face somehow. I imagine Putin will want to keep him around, but Syrian territory is not negotiable. Maybe some level of autonomy for those parts can be gained and refugees can made to return there, but not total autonomy. We could all see some sort of play made in Libya to somehow put the East Med project into further limbo. There might not be a pipeline when all is said and done. It's not a victory by any means for Turkey, but it doesn't leave Turkey left out while other rivals in the region make gains, and that may prove worthwhile enough on which Erdogan can hang his proverbial hat.

To date, Putin has allowed Erdogan some room to save face when need be.

It didn't take Nostradamus to predict this. Putin is going to shore up Erdogan and for now Erdogan has been given a face saving ceasefire:

The real nature of the agreement will eventually bear out, but for now Erdogan doesn't have all the walls close in on him.

The current crisis between Moscow and Ankara is particularly difficult to overcome because so much Turkish blood has been spilled by Syrian forces that are armed, trained and often directed by Russia. Nearly 50 Turks have been killed in Syria so far this month as fighting for control of Idlib has gathered pace. As calls for revenge in Turkey have grown, however, Mr. Putin has sought to calm tempers and avoid a head-to-head conflict. “We are not going to fight against anyone,” he told the Tass news agency in an interview published on Monday. The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Mr. Putin still expected to reach a “common understanding on the crisis” in Syria with Mr. Erdogan.

It did not detail how this might be possible, when Mr. Erdogan has himself been calling for a cease-fire while Russia has insisted that Syrian government forces must clear Idlib of “terrorists.”

But there is still room for a possible compromise. Unlike Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, who has vowed to recover “every inch of land” from the rebels, Russia is mostly interested in protecting its military air base at Hmeimim and a naval base on the Mediterranean coast.

Russia has in the past floated the idea of letting the rebels hang on to the city of Idlib under Turkish protection, along with territory up to the border, while Turkey and its rebel allies pull back from two vital highways — the M5, which runs north south from Damascus to Aleppo, and the M4, which runs eastward from the coast toward the border with Iraq — that have been blocked for years because of fighting.

The current tensions between Moscow and Ankara, said Mr. Trenin, have delivered a “severe reality check to the relationship,” but left some hope the two strongmen leaders, each accustomed to getting his own way, can overcome more hawkish members of their military and political establishments to find a face-saving, if only temporary, compromise.

The New York Times might as well be called Pravda. It's clear to me this ceasefire is the prelude to a pullout in a manner that allows Erdogan to declare his campaign into Syria a success, despite being a failure. We'll likely see Syrian refugees, many who now live in Turkey, repatriated to these parts and Erdogan will be allowed to hang his hat on that fact. He made safe for them to return, they'll say. He's far worse than Assad as far as anyone can be concerned.

The groveling news stories today are so pathetic. The tone and language of the articles has shifted markedly. That should serve as a strong reminder of just how much the news is really an extension of government-run propaganda. They practically make Turkey out to be heroes for forcing migrants onto Greek shores. It's so pathetic.

And no sooner that Russia agreed to this deal, Turkey and Israel began attacking sites in Syria. Turkey claims they killed 21 soldiers after 2 more Turkish soldiers were killed. This move is designed to bolster his image in Turkey. I doubt their claims. Israel meanwhile didn't announce anything.

Also Turkey, our loving NATO ally, has sent a 1,000 special forces officers to the border to make sure the migrants don't head back. They claim it's to make sure the Greek government doesn't mistreat them.

Let's see how Biden acts in the US election. I think he's the best hope we have as far as American support goes in this fight against Erdogan. Just look at what he did in Ukraine. Let's give his son a cushy job working for some firm on the East Med pipeline and Joe's your uncle.
