With Turkey being run by a dictator, Greece's strategic geographic position has resulted in America becoming more interested in strengthening military ties.

Greece and the United States are in deliberations over the establishment of a U.S. Army base on Karpathos island in the Dodecanese.

According to an ANT1 television report, discussions are at an advanced stage. The U.S. discusses the use of the island for an air base for F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft, and a defensive Patriot missile system.

The U.S. wants a larger U.S. armed forces presence in Greece due to its geopolitical significance.

The issue of Karpathos is high on the agenda in the upcoming visit of Defense Minister Panos Kammenos to the U.S, and his meeting with his American counterpart, James Matisse, according to ANT1.

So far the two sides have agreed for the placement of American Drones MQ-9 Reaper at the Larissa airport. Also, U.S. F-35 fighter jets will be relocated in Volos. F-16s will be stationed in Andravida, while U.S. F-15s are at the Souda base in Crete, according to the same report.

Karpathos is right next to my island (Kasos) so it would be pretty bad ass to know there are f-22 raptors stationed near us, but in all this is good news for Greece's territorial integrity. Shows perhaps the US is starting to change its foreign policy objectives in order to limit Turkey's importance and elevate Greece's.

Given what Greece is doing to help force through FYROM's ascension to NATO, I think the US sees in Greece a more reliable partner at time when Turkey plays both sides while aspiring to edge away on its own. To state things more a matter of fact, they see Greece as a weaker nation they can manipulate and Turkey a nation they desire to further manipulate, but find themselves somewhat outmaneuvered after the failed coup against Erdogan.

Only problem is, I always get the feeling the real US love affair is with Albanians - not Greeks - whatever Greeks give the US.

To state things more a matter of fact, they see Greece as a weaker nation they can manipulate and Turkey a nation they desire to further manipulate, but find themselves somewhat outmaneuvered after the failed coup against Erdogan.

agreed. Turkey wants to to renew the Ottoman Empire though, and their population size requires an increasing steam of energy. Greece is smart to cozy up to America but US has pretty much forced the issue with the gypsies up north and so I wonder how much Greece is forced to trade its history and culture for security from an increasingly hostile turkey.

It's more than just sustaining a growing population and reestablishing the Ottoman empire. Erdogan wants to make Turkey a bigger player on the international stage capable of acting on its own accord. That requires a certain degree of independence in energy and access, so other countries can't dictate to them. I think he also realizes he stands a better chance of this by striking a union with other Muslim countries, i.e., an Islamic Caliphate to stand toe-to-toe with the EU, the US, China and Russia. To put it simply, they want to be what Germany is to the EU.

Right now they have a piece of Syria and my guess is they'll try to hold onto it or at least use it to negotiate a better deal for themselves vis-a-vis Russia and the West. I think the West (US, UK, France and Germany) is saying the Turks can keep the land. Russia is telling them to return it to Syria. Turkey will do whatever takes to continue playing their double-game, shifting alliances as needed, as they inch towards their goals which in the end are independent of Western, Russian, and other foreign interests.

Turkey wont leave Syria easily and they are already colonizing. Turkish is now being taught alongside arabic in all schools in idlib and afrin. Everyday Turkey pours more military hardware into the pocket to further secure it. Russia has instructed Assad not to invade Idlib and thus has helped the process of Ottomanisation.
