      This graph looks scary, but it only reflects measurements of CO2 levels and has nothing to do with the climate itself. Moreover, the graph only goes back 800,000 years ago, which makes it somewhat misleading because it looks like CO2 levels have never been higher.

      The last mass extinction event was more than 250 million years ago. When that happened, CO2 levels were at about 3,000 ppm and the extinction occurred probably because of volcanic ash and/or dust cause by a meteorite crash blocking out the sun. Today CO2 levels stand a only 450 ppm.

      Moreover, a graph of recent global temperatures suggests a less alarming trend. Since 1998, and despite rising CO2 levels, temperatures have more or less stagnated:



      Why the sudden pause? There is no definitive answer other than that there is more to what drives temperatures than what even best experts had previously thought. It's been suggested that cloud cover, causing an umbrella effect, and solar activity are much bigger drivers. That would make a lot more sense. Those are factors that would certainly do a good job of explaining the sudden pause.
