They assume the vaccine will work with the new strain but don't know 100%.

At this point, I'm certain they have tested this strain and 3 different variants, and the vaccine is working. The protein uptake on this mutation....has been tested.

There was that flash point early on in the UK. The first week. The tory government - exceptionally pro business centrists got all the info on the Corona Virus. Their plan? Herd immunity, let it run through the population. They even stated that would be the strategy. However within 48 hours they realised the optics of even one woman screaming at them on TV: 'You killed my grandmother!' etc etc, immediately made them go full reverse instead choosing lockdown after lockdown.

Personally, I think the best course of action was to employ a hybrid approach. Let the economy stay open but mandate safeguards, social distancing, mask wearing, etc. If there are clusters of areas where the hospital system is overwhelmed and extremely taxed, then mandate strict 2-3 week lockdowns (essential employees should only be doctors, hospital workers, law enforcement - sorry but liquor stores are not essential). Most of the population has lockdown fatigue and this has led to a lapse of following appropriate social norms.

The whole lock down, shelter-in-place mentality in retrospect was an unmitigated disaster and ushered in unintended consequences on this side of the pond, in particularly the US, with the chinese communists and their bed fellows, the democrats, as the big winners. The biggest losers, obviously were the elderly and people with multiple morbidities, right up there with the US constitution and the end of US preeminence, with president elect DIM SUM inauguration on Jan 21st
